STACS Activities

To help achieve our stated aims, STACS is actively engaged in the following activities:

  • Facilitating weekly meetings of STACS members in Telford and Shrewsbury. The meeting format is informal, and includes:
    • problem sharing and discussion of possible coping strategies
    • information items and news
    • occasional speakers from the professional field
  • Producing a quarterly newsletter;
  • Maintaining a library of information on Asperger Syndrome/HFA  at Wellington library;
  • Arranging social and respite outings;
  • Working alongside other groups, e.g. Autonomy, PODS, NHS and Local Authorities to improve the support for carers and our people with Asperger Syndrome/HFA;
  • Raising public awareness of Asperger Syndrome/HFA;
  • Producing a Carers’ Handbook for carers of people with Asperger Syndrome/HFA;
  • Promote and support low level preventative and supportive ‘Hubs’ in both Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire.

STACS has been involved in the consultation process for the government’s Adult Autism Act Strategy since 2009, and in the formulation of the Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire Adult Autism Strategy since October 2010.

STACS is also actively involved with :

  • Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire Mental Health Forums;
  • South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (SSSFT);
  • ‘Healthwatch Shropshire’ and ‘Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin’;
  • Telford & Wrekin Low Level Preventative & Supportive Hub ‘Polestar’;
  • Development work towards a Shropshire Low Level Preventative & Supportive Hub;
  • ‘Listen not Label’ voluntary group – Telford &Wrekin;
  • Carers’ Forum Steering Group – Shropshire;
  • Active Carers Group;
  • Better Care Fund – Telford;
  • Send Direct / Local Offer – Telford;
  • National Autistic Society (NAS);
  • Autism Awareness Day.
